The Hail Mary is a sacred holy prayer taken from the Gospel of St Luke.
The words of the Hail Mary are therefore taken from the inspired Word of God.
The first part of the Hail Mary was, for the first time, pronounced on earth by the tongue of the Archangel Gabriel.
The holy name of Mary strikes terror into the devils; for from the beginning she crushed the serpent’s head.
The Lord was with the Blessed Virgin in a manner different from all other creatures, whether on earth or in heaven. The Lord was with her in a special manner at the very first moment of her existence, preserving her soul pure and immaculate from every stain of original sin.
Mary herself was “blessed,” but infinitely more “blessed” was the fruit of her womb; for the fruit of her womb was Jesus; Jesus is God, and God is infinitely blessed and worthy of the infinite blessings of men and angels for all eternity.
St Cyril, the great bishop of Alexandria, who flourished in the fifth century, vindicates the dignity of Mary as Mother of God in the clearest and most concise terms. “I am astonished how many Christians can call in question the divine maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or doubt whether she is to be called the Mother of God. For if Our Lord Jesus Christ is God, as the Scriptures clearly teach, the holy Virgin, His Mother, who brought him forth, must consequently be the Mother of God. This the Apostles taught, this our predecessors have delivered to us, this is the Catholic Doctrine, and the belief of Christ’s Church.
